The oyster population has been steadily declining in New York's Harbor due to pollution and overharvesting. Oysters have been a key element in the area since the Indigenous Lenape people lived in the region prior to European colonization
Billion Oyster Project
With over 2.8 M pounds of shells collected and over 30.000 involved students, this project aims to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor in collaboration with New York City communities. Both a social and sustainable project the Billion Oyster Project is creating long lasting change one volunteer at a time.
